Frequently Asked Questions

What is your design style?

Design style can mean one thing to one person and another to someone else. We try to avoid labels that might limit our imagination or narrow our expertise. What matters to us is creating designs that you feel represents you honestly, with an emphasis on choices that are timelessly joyful and just fearless enough to create a memorable impression.

What should I expect at the first house call?

On the first house call, we gather detailed information about the desired outcomes of the project. We guide the discussion to help reveal important details and viable options for your project. Potential costs and key timelines will be reviewed.

What happens after the house call?

We outline our goals and estimate design costs in a scope of work document to assure utmost transparency before we begin. When the scope of work has been agreed upon, we return to the house to get detailed measurements and site photos. After that, the development stage begins as we further craft our concept; create renderings and specifications; research the best options; and select materials. This is where the design challenges are met with solutions and our creativity shines.

What should I expect at the presentation?

At presentation we provide tactile and visual aids as we discuss our proposed ideas. Often our clients want to move forward with exactly what we’ve presented, but sometimes we need to tweak a few details to make the design a little more perfect. The subsequent editing stage is dedicated to alternate selections and refinements.

How do we get the ball rolling?

Once the details are agreed on, it’s time to get orders placed. After we prepare the invoices and receive your deposit, we process and track orders, consult with third party contractors, and maintain contact with all parties to assure a smooth and timely design installation.

How long does it take to complete a design project?

Depending on the scope of the project, completion dates will vary. If we are beginning a project while the site is still in the planning and blueprint stage, we will work closely with you to schedule special orders in advance of a projected move-in date to assure prompt completion. For all projects, custom furnishings, window treatments, and home decor typically can take up to three months from order date to delivery.

How much will my interior design cost?

There are three primary areas of cost in a design project: interior design fees, special order item costs, and sub-contractor fees. Each project has unique challenges and demands that impact the time it takes for a design to be conceptualized and created, which is why we provide our scope of work document. While the scope of work is only an estimate of time required and does not factor in time spent in later project edits, it does help to establish a baseline of design fees. At our first house call, we will talk about your budget and project goals and how to tailor the design to best meet those requirements. The costs of subcontractors will depend on the project goals. We do not directly provide services such as carpentry and painting or quotes for such services, but we can often recommend excellent resources for this work to make sure your best interests are represented.

When will design fees apply?

When we are researching, designing, overseeing work related to your project, and meeting with you to discuss your project, our hourly design fee of $140.00 will apply. Examples of typical scenarios for which our clients are billed include time spent on site visits; time in our office creating floor plans, elevations, and making selections; and time spent in research at third party suppliers such as flooring or cabinetry retailers. Beyond a thirty minute drive from our studio, travel time is billed at our full rate. All design and travel fees are billed in quarter hour increments.

When will design fees not apply?

There are no design fees for our initial complimentary studio meeting; when we are placing and tracking orders; and during scheduling and oversight of installations.

Am I obligated to purchase the items my designer recommends?

We base all of our recommendations on the merits of each piece, assembling a collection to solve problems and offer comfort and beauty. While our design agreement does not require that you purchase the items we specify, our intent is to understand your goals and budget so well that purchasing our recommended furnishings and decor elements is an intuitive choice. Our selections make realizing your design more seamless and successful.

When will I be billed?

Your first design fee invoice will be billed after our presentation. Subsequent design fees are billed monthly as your project unfolds. After installation of your design project, any open balances for furnishings and decor will be billed for payment upon receipt. We are happy to offer an online payment option through links we send via email. Alternatively, all invoices are payable by check or credit card.
